One thing needful…

Martha received him [Christ] into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving; and she went to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve you alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her.”

The reading is from Luke 10:38-42, 11:27-28

Dear reader, our lives afford us all too many opportunities to be busy- to bustle about here and there, doing this and doing that.  Our lives also afford us all too many opportunities to be anxious and troubled.  Our Lord above knows about all our anxieties and troubles, but He tells us here, clearly, one thing is needful.  One.

From this passage it can be said that the one thing we ought to do is to simply sit at the feet of Christ and listen to his teaching.  Yes, even today.  But we no longer have Christ here to sit at his feet and learn, right?  Well, that then should cause us to go to our knees in prayer, put ourselves at his feet in prayer, at our icon corner, or at church, kneeling before His majesty, and also in silence listening to His teaching that comes in so many forms.

Christ’s teaching will also come when we come to the Word of God with open hearts and minds, desiring to learn from the written testaments and letters of the Bible. So reading scripture then would be another way to sit at the feet of Christ.

God help us to follow Christ’s words, here and now, and always.  By His grace, be not a busy body, pray and set your anxieties and troubles at the feet of God, The One Thing Needful.
